HORIZON MSCA-DN 2026

HORIZON MSCA-DN 2026

The Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Networks call invites universities, research institutions, businesses (including SMEs), and socio-economic organizations to collaborate as a consortium and implement new doctoral programmes.

Prior to applying, PIs are also required to confirm that there will be no negative impacts on other responsibilities of staff on secondment, including teaching or the achievements of deliverables for ongoing projects.

This is the annual bottom-up call for proposals to promote international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral cooperation and train PhD candidates in various scientific areas. This is done with a focus on promoting entrepreneurial mind-sets, research-related and transferable skills and long-term career prospects within and outside academia.

The Resource for Artificial Intelligence Science in Europe (RAISE) Doctoral Networks for AI in Science is a Pilot call under Horizon Europe Cluster 4 integrated into the MSCA Doctoral Networks 2026 call cycle. These will work exactly as the standard MSCA DN with a focus on developing and applying novel AI methodologies to address scientific challenges, aiming at strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy and capacity in AI.

Both calls offer 3 strands to choose from:

Standard Doctoral Networks: Candidates enroll in a doctoral programme and contribute to a joint research project.

Industrial Doctorates: Candidates develop skills in both academia and industry through joint supervision by academic and non-academic organizations.

Joint Doctorates: Highly integrated international, inter-sectoral, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Any consortium must consist of at least 3 partners from different EU Member States or Associated Countries, with at least 1 EU Member State. Additionally, at least 1 partner must be eligible to award doctoral degrees—a requirement that increases to at least 2 partners for proposals under Joint Doctorates.

Conditions of Eligibility for Doctoral Candidate:

  • must not have a doctoral degree at the date of their recruitment
  • can be of any nationality
  • should be enrolled in a doctoral programme leading to the award of a doctoral degree in at least one EU Member State, Horizon Europe Associated Country or non-EU, non-Associated third country
  • a beneficiary based in a non-EU, non-Associated third country can be the sole degree-awarding institution (not applicable for Joint Doctorates)
  • be employed for a period as of 3 months and maximum 36 months, except in the case of joint doctorates, where this maximum duration is 48 months
  • should comply with the “mobility rule”: in general, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date
  • should spend at least 50% of their time outside academia, for Industrial Doctorates
  • can carry out secondments during up to one half of the duration of research training activities carried out their MSCA fellowship. This limitation does not apply in the case of Industrial Doctorates and Joint Doctorates.

Funding is automatically calculated based solely on person-months, country correction coefficients, and selected allowances. When participating as a partner, coordinators typically retain a % of management and indirect costs. The PI must confirm this retention % with RGFM prior to submission to properly assess project feasibility.
