(South African) Eastern Cape delegation strengthens academic and investment ties during ½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ visit

On Friday, 29 May 2026, an Eastern Cape delegation from South Africa visited the University of Malta as part of an official mission to Italy and Malta aimed at fostering bilateral cooperation and exploring investment opportunities.

The delegation was led by Mr Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, Premier of the Eastern Cape, and comprised 18 accompanying officials, including representatives from Nelson Mandela University. They were joined by the High Commissioner of South Africa to Malta, Her Excellency Ms Nosipho Nausca Jean Jezile.

On their arrival at the University of Malta, the delegation was received by Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella who presented the delegation with a copy of The University of Malta: Legacies and Bearings, a publication highlighting the institution's history, achievements, and contributions to higher education.

During their visit to the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Malta, the delegation attended a lecture delivered by Prof. Timmy Gambin. He  provided insights into Malta's rich archaeological and maritime heritage, as well as highlighting avenues for collaboration between the two Universities

The visit formed part of broader engagements in Italy and Malta focused on strengthening bilateral relations, promoting investment opportunities, and enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest between South Africa and its Mediterranean partners.
