From Malta to the University of Melbourne - a thriving exchange partnership

The University of Malta (½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ) and the have been collaborating for several years.

In 2017, the first student exchange agreement was signed, allowing students from both universities to study abroad for a semester at the University of Malta and the University of Melbourne, respectively. The exchange agreement was renewed in 2021, and it has been renewed again in 2026.

Australian universities are highly ranked global institutions recognised for their world-class research, strong graduate employability, and exceptional strengths in fields like biomedicine, engineering, and environmental sustainability.

Nine Australian universities are in the global top 100, according to QS 2026, showing high research quality and employer reputation.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2026, the University of Melbourne is Australia’s top-ranked university and 19th globally, recognised as a world-leading research institution in biomedical sciences, infectious diseases, and climate sustainability.

The Global Learning Office at the University of Melbourne has consistently worked closely with the International Office of the ½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ to foster a strong exchange programme and has taken the opportunity to work closely on knowledge sharing in the areas of study abroad, student support and mobility management.

University of Malta students have shown a growing interest in studying in Australia over the last decade and have benefited from opportunities through various exchange agreements.

In fact, since this specific agreement was signed in 2017, 12 students from ½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ and 14 students from the University of Melbourne have successfully participated in the exchange programme.

Furthermore, ½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ academics are collaborating with academics from the University of Malta in various fields.

Discussions are ongoing with the Department of Gender & Sexualities within the Faculty for Social Wellbeing at ½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ to establish a network with the University of Melbourne to discuss gender equality plans, inclusive language guidelines, and strict campus sexual harassment policies while utilising AI software to capture critical data on policy effectiveness.

Last but not least, two staff members from the International Office travelled to Australia in February to visit our partner institutions: the University of Canberra, Victoria University, and the University of Melbourne. The team met with their counterparts, attended orientation sessions, and discussed strategies to simplify and improve student exchanges, ultimately strengthening institutional relationships and communication.

The International Office will issue the next call for applications for students to study abroad in October 2026. Students will receive the information by email. The call will also be published on Newspoint.
