Educator of the Year at the annual Youth Awards organised by FreeHour Malta

Congratulations to Prof. Andrew Azzopardi, lecturer with the Department of Youth, Community and Migration Studies at the Faculty for Social Wellbeing and broadcaster on , on being named Educator of the Year at the annual Youth Awards organised by FreeHour Malta.

Reflecting on the recognition, Prof. Azzopardi said: “Being nominated by students was already such a privilege, but winning this award among so many incredible nominees is truly overwhelming.”

The prestigious award was decided through a combination of student votes and an independent jury, making it a particularly meaningful accolade. Nominated by his students, Prof. Azzopardi described the honour as “the most prestigious and heartfelt award I have ever received.” He dedicated the award to all his students, with a special tribute to Laura Rio, who passed away suddenly a few months ago.

During his acceptance speech, Prof. Azzopardi urged students to remain committed to justice, encouraging them to challenge wrongdoing, resist injustice, and have the courage to stand by their values, even when doing so comes at a personal cost.

A deeply respected educator, mentor, and public intellectual, Prof. Azzopardi has long championed the voices of young people and the importance of active citizenship. This recognition reflects the profound impact he continues to have on generations of students both inside and outside the classroom.

In related news, Prof. Ä orÄ¡ Mallia, the Head of the Department of Media & Communications within the Faculty of Media & Knowledge Sciences, was also a finalist in the same category.

½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ student organisation  (European Law Students’ Association) won student organisation of the year, whereas  won Tech & Science Excellence Award. Paul Psaila, a student at the Institute of Digital Games, was also a finalist in this category for his science education content.
