The Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) at the University of Malta was established in 1990 based on an agreement between the Governments of  and . The main mission of the Academy since its inception has been to provide advanced (post-graduate) instruction to junior diplomats as well as students seeking an international career in diplomacy, international and non-government organisations, or the private sector.

MEDAC offers Master degrees in Diplomatic Studies. The academic programme in Diplomatic Studies comprises International Law, International Relations, International History, International Economics and Diplomacy. Language instruction is in English, French or German is another element of the Masters programme. The programme provides students with an opportunity to study and interact in an international setting with students coming from North Africa, Middle East, Africa, Europe and beyond. The relationships developed in the classroom flourish into life-long friendships and professional networks.

 

MEDAC strives to provide its students with an all-round experience which includes simulation of negotiation experiences, visits by international lecturers, exposure to the culture of the Maltese islands, and - depending on available funding - study visits abroad.

 

Each academic year, MEDAC students have the opportunity of engaging with distinguished speakers including current and former foreign ministries and high-level EU representatives. Another prominent feature of the Masters programme is the Ambassadorial lecture series under which Ambassadors accredited to Malta interact with the students. Visits to institutions and international companies in Malta are also part of this unique experience. 

 

Mediterranean culture and cuisine are also a popular feature of our extra-curricular activities. MEDAC鈥檚 annual cultural night is a celebration of culinary diplomacy with students themselves preparing mouth-watering dishes. Guided tours to some of Malta鈥檚 finest cities are also organized.

 

Graduation takes place in a 500-year old church in the capital city of Valletta.

The Masters programme is ideal for those active or aspiring to pursue careers in international organisations, diplomatic missions, public administration, non-governmental organisations or in the private sector.

In addition to its affiliation with the University of Malta, MEDAC was supported for over thirty years by the  and continues to be supported by the . In more recent years, the  has established the German Chair in Peace and Conflict Prevention at MEDAC, and the Academy has concluded a partnership agreement with . The Anna Lindh Foundation with its Young Mediterranean (YMV) programme is another recent partner of MEDAC.
