Post of Scientific Officer – Conservation of Cultural Heritage

The University of Malta is seeking to recruit a Scientific Officer in the Department of Conservation and Built Heritage within the Faculty for the Built Environment. The appointee will be responsible for supporting the academic and research staff at the Department of Conservation and Built Heritage, in all laboratory work pertaining to didactic activities, conservation teaching, research and site projects.
This is a position for a highly motivated and organised person with a degree in Conservation, a Cultural heritage discipline, Science (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Geology), or other relevant fields.
The selected candidate will carry out preparations for student conservation practical sessions; provide support during practical sessions; maintain all conservation laboratories in an orderly fashion; procure materials and chemicals according to the instructions of the academic staff; establish laboratory health and safety protocols and ensure that they are being followed. Other duties will include inventory and stock control of materials and tools; ensuring that tools and equipment are functional/in good working condition; organizing and maintaining the Department sample collection; procedure and report writing; and performing any other duties as may be required by the University. The Scientific Officer will respond to the Head of Department, who may delegate oversight of the duties to other academic members of the Department.
The ideal candidate will be able to work independently but also have a strong collaborative work ethic. They will have problem-solving skills, and an enthusiastic approach to their work. They will demonstrate flexibility and adaptability, and enjoy working with colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds.
Eligibility
Preference will be given to applicants who already possess relevant working experience.
Possessing a University Master’s degree in Conservation, Science, a Cultural Heritage discipline, or other relevant field (MQF Level 7 – minimum 120ECTS) will be considered as an asset.
Salary
The salary for 2026 attached to the post is €29,994 rising by annual increments of €500 up to a maximum of €33,494. On completion of two years’ service in the grade, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance, be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €535 up to a maximum of €35,764.
After a further period of five years’ service in the grade, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance, be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €600 up to a maximum of €38,384.

A vacancy currently exists in the Department of Conservation and Built Heritage for the post of Scientific Officer – Conservation of Cultural Heritage.
The Scientific Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the conservation laboratories and studios within the Department of Conservation and Built Heritage. The Officer will coordinate with academic, research and other laboratory staff to facilitate the Department’s academic and research commitments and to support students in their practical work. The work includes organising and maintaining the Conservation laboratories functional at all times; maintaining inventories; procuring materials, chemicals and tools necessary for student practical and other activities; managing the loan or use of such items by students and staff; making sure that all materials, chemicals and tools are available, in good condition and in place for each practical session in the Conservation laboratories/studios and/or on site; assisting academic staff during didactic practical activities; organising and maintaining health and safety protocols of the Conservation laboratories and studios, including being aware of and managing hazardous waste management procedures; ensuring that tools and equipment are functional/in good working condition; organising and maintaining the Department sample collection; as well as any other duties as may be required by the University.
