Junior College

 

Applications are invited for a Full-time Academic post in Economics at the Junior College.

The appointment will be on an indefinite basis, subject to one-year probationary period, up to statutory retirement age.

Candidates will normally be required to have the following:

  • Qualifications:
    • a relevant first degree (MQF Level 6) and a postgraduate qualification at (MQF Level 7) with a minimum of 90 ECTS. The Masters shall be related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach;
    • or a relevant first degree (MQF Level 6) and a Master of Teaching and Learning (MTL) at (MQF Level 7) with a minimum of 90 ECTS or equivalent. The MTL shall be related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach.
  • Experience: Candidates must also have at least five (5) years of teaching and/or professional experience in a position of responsibility directly related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach, or a combination of both making up at least five (5) full years.

 

The lecturing categories at the Junior College are those of Junior College Assistant Lecturer, Junior College Lecturer, Junior College Senior Lecturer I and Junior College Senior Lecturer II. At the time of this call only the following are available:

 

Eligibility 

  • Junior College Assistant Lecturer: All the requirements above must be observed.

  • Junior College Lecturer: Qualifications and specific requirements as above and at least eight (8) years of teaching experience or professional experience in a position of responsibility related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach, or a combination of both making up at least eight (8) full years.

  • Junior College Senior Lecturer I: Qualifications and specific requirements as above and at least thirteen (13) years of teaching experience or professional experience in a position of responsibility related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach, or a combination of teaching experience and professional experience making up the thirteen (13) full years.

  • Junior College Senior Lecturer II: Qualifications and specific requirements as above and at least seventeen (17) years teaching experience or professional experience in a position of responsibility related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach, or a combination of teaching experience and professional experience making up the seventeen (17) full years;

    Moreover, such an officer is expected to have obtained local recognition as an expert teacher of their subject through the development of pedagogical material, contribution to curricular development and/or publication of academic works that are suited to support the teaching of their subjects at secondary and post-secondary levels.

 

The lecturing categories at the Junior College are those of Junior College Assistant Lecturer, Junior College Lecturer, Junior College Senior Lecturer I and Junior College Senior Lecturer II.

 

Salary 

The annual salary for 2026 attached to the respective lecturing categories is as follows:

Junior College Senior Lecturer II; €53,087 plus Academic Supplement of €8,809

Junior College Senior Lecturer I; €48,371 plus Academic Supplement of €8,196
                                                                         

Junior College Lecturer; €41,614 with an annual increment of €641 up to €42,896 and an Academic Supplement of €7,490

Junior College Assistant Lecturer; €39,117 with an annual increment of €596 to €40,309 and an Academic Supplement of €4,479

 

Application procedure

The University of Malta will provide academic staff with financial resources through the Junior College Academic Resources Fund to support their teaching, their activities related to curriculum development and the promotion of their subject.

Candidates are required to upload covering letter, curriculum vitae (clearly specifying full-time and part-time employment), certificates (certificates should be submitted preferably in English) and names and emails of three referees through this form: /hr/workatum-general.

Further Information

General Working Obligations


The conditions of work for the Academic Staff at the Junior College are set out in the ‘Collective Agreement between the University of Malta and the Malta Union of Teachers for Academic Staff of the Junior College January 2024 – December 2029’ and the ‘Manual of Conduct and Procedures’.

Junior College Academics commitment is based on a 40-hour week. Formal teaching duties at the Junior College shall be carried between 08:00 and 17:00 from Monday to Friday.

Staff may be asked to teach outside these times only on a voluntary basis for a stipulated period and against additional compensation.

Should the Junior College introduce Diploma level courses during the term of this Collective Agreement the working conditions and remuneration for these courses shall be devised in agreement with the union.

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of one year and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.

 

The Junior College


The mission of the Junior College is to provide a high quality, inclusive and holistic learning experience intended to enhance the knowledge and lifelong skills needed for higher education, active citizenship, employment and life itself.

The appointee is expected to:

  • Deliver lectures and individual contact hours, supervise practical work and projects, as applicable;
  • Be digital-literate as the above sessions may be delivered online as assigned by the administration;
  • Assess students continuously and mark examination papers within established time-frames;
  • Participate in the administration of academic affairs at the College;
  • Participate in periodic meetings with the Principal, Area Coordinator and Subject Coordinator;
  • Contribute to the Junior College’s Enrichment Programme, within and outside the College;
  • Accompany students abroad when required.

 

The Department of Economics

Besides the above, the appointee may be expected to perform the following duties within the Department of Economics:

  • Be able to teach all areas and levels of the subject;
  • Attend departmental meetings during which the appointee will be expected to give their contribution about matters related to the Department of Economics;
  • Participate in the administration of the Department as may be required or delegated by the Subject Coordinator;
  • Be capable of working in a team, attend and participate in seminars and/or conferences organised by the Department;
  • Prepare and update course material in line with the syllabus;
  • Evaluate the yearly Economics MATSEC examination reports and provide feedback to the Subject Coordinator;
  • Keeping record of one's own work, of attendance and assessment results of students and forward such information to the Subject Coordinator as requested;
  • Submit end-of-year examination questions and assessment tasks when required;
  • Manage classes in accordance with ethical standards and the students’ code of behaviour;
  • Help students in their holistic educational development to enable each to achieve his/her potential.
  • Actively seek projects and initiatives related to the area.
  • Hold sessions to prepare students who would like to participate in the above initiatives.

 

Selection Procedures

  • The scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application).
  • Short-listing of candidates.
  • An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.
  • A short presentation on a topic pertaining to the teaching of Economics is assigned to short-listed candidates.

The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in the Recruitment of Resident Academic Staff: (/hr/policiesprocedures).

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant academic / work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability; and
  • Performance in interview
