Dr Odette Lewis is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spatial Planning and Infrastructure within the Faculty for the Built Environment at the University of Malta. She has been lecturing at the University of Malta since 2009 and currently teaches in the area of road transport infrastructure. Her main research interests focus on infrastructure planning and design, with particular emphasis on green and smart mobility.
Dr Lewis read for a Bachelor of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Malta, graduating in 2001, and subsequently obtained an M.Sc. in Road Engineering from the same University in 2004. In 2007, she was awarded a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) PhD research scholarship, which enabled her to undertake a ten-month research stay at the University of Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. She completed her PhD at the University of Malta in 2013.
Dr Lewis has extensive professional experience in the field of civil engineering and transport infrastructure, having worked in both the public and private sectors. She has been a warranted perit since 2003 and began her professional career with the Roads Directorate of the Authority for Transport in Malta. Between 2003 and 2005, she worked as a Procurement Engineer with MECAP Ltd., contributing to a number of international civil engineering projects. She subsequently returned to the Authority for Transport, where, between 2005 and 2012, she occupied various positions including that of a Project Leader within the Roads and Infrastructure Directorate.
During this period, she was involved in the planning, design and project management of a number of EU-funded road and maritime transport infrastructure projects in Malta. Her professional experience has provided her with a practical approach in transport infrastructure planning, design and implementation, which complements her academic and research activities. She currently also provides consultancy services in the areas of road transport infrastructure policy, planning and design.
Her academic and professional work brings together her interests in transport infrastructure, sustainable mobility and the planning and design of transport systems, with a particular focus on developing infrastructure that supports greener, smarter and more people-oriented mobility.
