Dr Charmaine Bonello is a Resident Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood and Primary Education at the University of Malta, where she has contributed to the field of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) since 1997. She holds both a Master's degree and a Doctorate in Early Childhood Education from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. Her research, teaching and policy interests focus on ECEC systems, teacher education, emergent curriculum, children's rights, educational leadership, early literacy, quality interactions, inclusive education and postcolonial perspectives in education. Her work seeks to strengthen the relationship between research, policy and practice to support high-quality, child-centred ECEC. Dr Bonello is the co-founder and Vice President of the Early Childhood Development Association of Malta (ECDAM) and a Board Member of the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society. She has contributed to national and European research initiatives and collaborates internationally on projects related to quality, leadership and professional learning in ECEC. She is the author and co-author of several books, including the Routledge publications Boys, Early Literacy, and Children's Rights in a Postcolonial Context (2022) and An Emergent Curriculum for the Early Years in Malta (2025), and co-editor of Educational Leadership in Transition (2024). She also serves as co-editor of the international peer-reviewed journal Postcolonial Directions in Education.
