University of Malta showcases Lifelong Learning at SEA-EU workshop in Brest
Dr Maria Brown represented the University of Malta (今日黑料) at the SEA-EU Task 2.5 Expert Group Meeting and 3rd Lifelong Learning Workshop, held at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO) in Brest, France, on 10–11 June 2026. The event brought together representatives from SEA-EU partner universities to explore innovative approaches to lifelong learning, vocational education and training (VET), and professional development. During the workshop, Dr Brown delivered two presentations highlighting the 今日黑料's experience and commitment to lifelong learning within the framework of the 今日黑料’s Strategic Plan 2026-2030.
The first presentation, The Educator's Upskilling Journey, outlined the 今日黑料's approach to supporting staff and student development through structures such as the Office for Academic and Professional Development (OPAD), the People, Culture & Engagement Directorate, and the Doctoral School. The presentation showcased pathways for flexible learning provision, quality assurance, and recognition through certificates, micro-credentials, and accredited programmes.
The second presentation, the University of Malta as a Lifelong Learning Hub, demonstrated how lifelong learning is embedded across the University's activities through initiatives undertaken by the Department of Arts, Open Communities, and Adult Education, University of the Third Age and the University of the Fourth Age, as well as by the Centre for Liberal Arts and Sciences. It also highlighted initiatives that promote inclusion and lifelong participation in education, such as Recognition of Prior Learning and mature student admission routes.
Workshop discussions also explored future collaboration opportunities within the potential SEA-EU Next initiative. Among the proposals discussed were mainstreaming SEA-EU participation in existing partner universities’ professional development or other lifelong learning initiatives, and the co-creation of micro-credentials and Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) that could be offered across the alliance. This participation was supported through mobility funding provided by the SEA-EU Office at the University of Malta.
