Research conducted by the Solar Research Laboratory at the Institute for Sustainable Energy (ISE) at the University of Malta has received international recognition at the , held in Rotterdam, Netherlands in September 2026.

The poster, entitled Defect Characterisation and Lifetime Stability in Gallium-Doped Crystalline Silicon for Stable High-Efficiency Solar Cells received the Best Poster Award in the category “Silicon Material Science and Technology | Manufacturing of Silicon Cells.”

The poster presented results from the ongoing funded by the Xjenza Malta-TÜB陌TAK 2024 Joint Call for R&I Proposals.

The project is being led by Prof. Luciano Mule’ Stagno and Dr In摹. Marija Demicoli from ISE’s Solar Research Laboratory at the University of Malta, in collaboration with the and the in Türkiye.

The award recognises the ongoing research efforts to better understand defects in silicon materials and their impact on the stability and performance of high-efficiency solar cells. This research contributes to the development of more reliable and efficient photovoltaic technologies, supporting the wider transition towards sustainable energy.

This achievement highlights the University of Malta's contribution to international research in photovoltaic technology and reflects the value of collaboration between research institutions and industry partners in advancing solar energy innovation.
