½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ academic honoured during Jum Paola celebrations

On Saturday, 18 July 2026, residents of Paola celebrated Jum Paola, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the town's official foundation by Grand Master Antoine de Paule. The celebrations took place in Pjazza Antoine de Paule and marked four centuries since the establishment of Casal Paola.

During the official ceremony, four distinguished residents were presented with the Ġieħ Paola Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Paola community and to society at large.

A historic highlight of the event was the unveiling of a monument to Grand Master Fra Antoine de Paule by the President of Malta, Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, together with the Mayor of Paola, Jason Silvio. The monument commemorates the 400th anniversary of the founding of Casal Paola and will remain a lasting symbol of the locality's history and identity.

Among the recipients of the Ġieħ Paola Award was Professor Peter Mayo, who was recognised for his distinguished academic contributions over many years. The award was conferred by the Paola Local Council in the locality where Professor Mayo has resided since his marriage in 1982. Although he was born and raised in Valletta, Paola has been his home for more than four decades.

Professor Mayo's international academic achievements continue to receive recognition. In January 2027, he is scheduled to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the Hellenic Open University in Patras, Greece, in acknowledgement of his distinguished contributions to scholarship and higher education.
