Seven University of Malta academics ranked in the Research.com annual rankings

Prof. Georgios N. Yannakakis (Institute of Digital Games), Prof. Joseph N. Grima (Chemistry), Prof. Ruben Gatt (Metamaterials Unit), Prof. Albert Caruana (Corporate Communication), Prof. Michael Galea (Electrical Engineering),Prof. Holger Mitterer (Cognitive Science), and Prof. Patrick Schembri (Biology) were ranked in ’s list of best scientists of 2026.

Research.com’s data team creates the rankings based on the quality of academic research. They published the 12th edition of the top scientists ranking using the numbers as of 1 January 2026. Research.com has been one of the major players offering credible data on scientific contributions since 2014. The can be further filtered into the various disciplines.

Several ½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ academics were also featured in the 2025 Stanford–Elsevier Top 2% Scientists ranking.

This level of world-class excellence centres upon the support of the University, its investment in research infrastructure and human resources, and participation in competitive external funding programmes. In 2025, the University kicked off 145 new externally-funded research projects with awards that amounted to EUR 17.1 million. In fact, ½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ’s international standing can be seen in its academics’ active engagement with international research collaborations, academic networks and multidisciplinary research initiatives.
