Katrine Heggstad visits University of Malta for process drama workshops

Katrine Heggstad, lecturer and theatre practitioner from Western University of Applied Sciences in Bergen, visited the University of Malta at the end of May to give lectures and lead intensive end-of-module workshops hosted by Prof. Isabelle Gatt. Her visit formed part of a long-running exchange between Bergen and Malta, with Gatt visiting Bergen over the years and Heggstad likewise coming to Malta, making this an ongoing academic and artistic dialogue rather than a one-off visit.

Her sessions formed part of the modules delivered by Prof. Gatt, giving students the opportunity to work with and learn from another academic and practitioner’s approach to Drama. Such exchanges are valuable in exposing students to different ways of thinking about and using Drama in practice.

The workshops focused on process drama with MTL Drama and Youth Studies students, and the work developed through a series of carefully framed phases. The process explored theme, roles and framing, and the strategic holding back of information, which proved especially important in maintaining tension and intensity.
