Fighting cancer with every kilometre: ALIVE Charity Foundation completes the VisitMalta ALIVE2026 Cycling Challenge for Cancer Research

After almost a week of battling scorching temperatures, relentless headwinds, steep climbs, rain, hail and every challenge the road could present, the cyclists taking part in the VisitMalta ALIVE2026 Cycling Challenge for Cancer Research have successfully completed their remarkable 1,100km journey, arriving in Vienna.

The six-day challenge once again brought together cyclists determined to push their physical and mental limits in support of a cause that extends far beyond the finish line: raising vital funds and awareness for cancer research.

Reflecting on the achievement, the thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the initiative.

"To every cyclist, support team member, sponsor, donor and supporter who followed this journey, encouraged the team and believed in this cause – thank you. This challenge is over, but the reason behind it is bigger than any finish line."

Since its establishment in 2013, the ALIVE Charity Foundation has become one of the University of Malta's most committed supporters of cancer research through regular donations to the University's Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT). Over the years, the Foundation has played a pivotal role in funding research projects aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of cancer.

A significant milestone was reached in 2025 when ALIVE surpassed the €1 million mark in funds raised for cancer research at the University of Malta—an extraordinary achievement made possible through the dedication of its volunteers, cyclists, sponsors and supporters.

Commenting on the Foundation's longstanding contribution, RIDT CEO Dr Claudette Buttigieg expressed her appreciation for the partnership.

"We are truly indebted to ALIVE. Over the years, they have consistently raised funds for research, and last year they surpassed the remarkable milestone of €1 million for cancer research at the University of Malta. We look forward to continuing to work together and witnessing their unwavering commitment, enabling our researchers to continue making a meaningful impact on society."

While the cyclists' journey has come to an end, the Foundation's mission continues, with every kilometre ridden helping to drive forward life-changing cancer research and offering hope for future generations.
