Engineered fluorescent switches highlighted on journal cover

Research conducted by the Molecular Logic Gates Laboratory of Prof. David Magri in the Department of Chemistry is the feature article in the latest issue of the .

The research highlights how light emitted by molecules, known as perylenediimides, can be modulated by changing their shape. Without substituents on the aromatic core, perylenediimides are planar and brightly emissive. During the study, perylenediimide molecules were synthesised with heterocyclic rings 4 to 7 atoms in size (R groups).

The light emitted by these new molecules was observed to increase as the ring size increases. However, the light emitted was not as bright as when there were no rings attached (R = H). It was determined that the ring substituents cause a non-planar, twisted geometry through the central plane of the molecules. The findings highlight a notable exception to a cherished fluorescence switching platform while opening future possibilities for modulating the emission by conformational tuning.
