On 20 July 2026, H.E. Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, Patron of the Faculty of Theology, hosted the Rector, Professor Frank Bezzina, Rector Emeritus Professor Alfred Vella, and the members of the Faculty of Theology for lunch at his residence in Mdina.
The Archbishop thanked Professor Vella for his distinguished contribution to the University of Malta and wished the new Rector every success in his role.
Professor Bezzina, in turn, reiterated his commitment to seeking the common good as the guiding principle of his rectorship and expressed his willingness to be available to everyone.
Rev. Professor Stefan Attard, Dean of the Faculty of Theology, thanked the Archbishop for his continued support of the Faculty and for ensuring that more priests receive academic formation for the benefit of society, even when their future ministry extends beyond the University of Malta.
He also acknowledged Professor Vella’s steadfast emphasis on the importance of ethics and morality at the University and highlighted the Faculty’s own commitment to this field through its Professional Ethics Platform, its specialised ethics courses, and the Position Papers it prepares to help inform legislators.
Finally, Professor Attard expressed his appreciation for the manner in which Professor Bezzina has addressed various University matters, noting his hands-on approach and his commitment to fostering strong communication with those in leadership positions at the University.
He wished him every success in his new role and expressed confidence that collaboration between the Rector and the Faculty would continue to flourish.
