Young Researchers鈥� Grant 2026 is now open
Esplora Interactive Science Centre has launched the , a new funding scheme designed to give young people in Malta the chance to carry out genuine scientific research of their own. This is the first time the grant has been opened, marking a new opportunity for aspiring scientists across the island.
The grant is open to young people aged 13 to 21 who are Maltese citizens or hold a Maltese residence permit. Successful applicants, referred to as Esploraturi, are split into two groups: Esploraturi Nebbieta (Sprouts), aged 13 to 17, and Esploraturi Blanzuni (Buds), aged 18 to 21. Applicants can apply individually or as part of a team of up to three, provided all team members fall within the same age bracket.
Each project can receive up to €700 in funding, while the researcher or mentor guiding the young scientist can separately receive up to €1,000 in recognition of their support. Projects must be based on a genuine scientific question, and must be completed within 12 months.
Beyond the funding, awardees benefit from a structured programme of hands-on training workshops covering transversal skills such as forming a hypothesis, collecting and analysing data, scientific writing, and public speaking, along with a mid-project workshop to share progress with fellow Esploraturi. The programme culminates in a conference-style event where participants present their findings to the public.
Applications must be submitted online through the Esplora by 21 October 2026, with results announced on 21 November 2026, when the training workshops and projects will begin. Dates are subject to change. Any change in dates will be communicated as soon as possible.
