Abstract
Starting with the impact and influence of three key avant-garde films of the 1970鈥檚 - Mulvey and Wollen鈥檚 Riddles of the Sphinx (1977), Michael Snow鈥檚 La R茅gion Centrale (1971) and Chris Welsby鈥檚 Seven Days (1974), I will discuss and explore my own engagement with the panoramic image from early single screen videotapes through to gallery and site-specific installation to my current work with 360 immersive imaging.
In addition to an exploration of the various technological and creative functions, applications and operations, I am interested in the notion of the 鈥渃amera machine鈥 and its role in challenging the tradition of the 鈥渟ubjective eye鈥 of the photographic artist and film-maker poet, including the so-called 鈥渘arcissistic鈥 tendency of the video medium.
Speaker鈥檚 Profile
Artist and writer Chris Meigh Andrews, Emeritus Professor of Electronic & Digital Art at the University of Central Lancashire, has been making and exhibiting video and installations internationally since the mid 1970鈥榮. He has written extensively on the history and context of artists鈥 video. His influential book 'A History of Video Art' (Bloomsbury, London, 2006 and 2013; Sangensha, Tokyo, 2013; China Pictorial, Beijing, 2018) provides an overview of the development of artists鈥 video since its inception.
