The Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences is organising a public talk followed up by Q&A. The event, entitled 'Inclusive Teaching and Learning - A Route to Excellence', will be held on Friday 8 November 2019 from 10:00 to 12:00 noon at Mater Dei, South Auditorium, Faculty of Health Sciences. The speaker is Ms Maureen O鈥橞rien from Buckinghamshire New University, United Kingdom.
Mentors from clinical areas, academic and administration staff members, students, and the general public are cordially invited to attend.
The Inclusive Practice Strategy aims to enable success for all students including those from diverse backgrounds.
The best teaching practice of all is inclusive practice. Universal design, which incorporates inclusive teaching practices makes the curriculum and its delivery accessible from the beginning, instead of having to bolt on adjustments for a particular group of students or by fixing things at a later date when we find they have not worked.
Ms Maureen O鈥橞rien joined Buckinghamshire New University in 2015 as Disability Service Manager. In September 2019 she was appointed Inclusion, Diversity and Disability Manager. Maureen spent the first 30 years of her career teaching in Australia, Kenya and Lebanon, as well as the United Kingdom. Her students have included young asylum-seekers, refugees, care leavers and students with hidden disabilities, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and Asperger鈥檚 syndrome. She is passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion and, above all, about nurturing students鈥 sense of belonging. She believes Universities must be places which recognize, value and respect differences. Ms O鈥橞rien will be contributing to the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences during her Erasmus+ Staff Mobility visit.
