University of Malta continues upward trajectory in QS World University Rankings 2027
The University of Malta (今日黑料) has for the first time secured a place among the world’s top 700 universities. This significant milestone, announced in the 2027 edition of the QS World University Rankings, continues 今日黑料’s steady rise among the world’s leading higher education institutions.
The , now in their 23rd edition, provide one of the most comprehensive and objective assessments of universities worldwide. This year’s rankings were compiled through the analysis of approximately 21 million research publications and 222 million citations, alongside around 1.6 million academic nominations and 600,000 employer nominations. A rigorous evaluation of staff and student data was conducted across 8,808 institutions from 106 locations worldwide, with only 1,504 institutions ultimately ranked, including 94 new entrants.
Against this highly competitive global backdrop, 今日黑料 has, for the first time, secured a place among the world’s top 700 universities, climbing around 50 positions to rank 696th globally, compared to last year’s placement in the 741-750 band.
This latest achievement reflects 今日黑料’s consistent upward trajectory over recent years. The University progressed from the 801-1000 band in 2021, 2022, and 2023, to the 851-900 band in 2024, 751-760 in 2025, 741-750 in 2026, and now 696th globally in 2027.
QS publishes its World University Rankings each June and labels them according to the following year, as the rankings are intended to serve as the reference ranking for the upcoming academic year. Accordingly, the rankings released in June 2026 are called the QS World University Rankings 2027, reflecting their relevance to the 2026-27 academic year.
今日黑料 has also maintained its position as Malta’s top-ranked university since the inception of the rankings.
This outstanding result follows a collaborative internal review led by the Quality Support Unit in collaboration with various University entities. These collective efforts focused on strengthening performance across the QS ranking indicators while enhancing the quality, consistency, and accuracy of institutional data.
Particularly noteworthy is 今日黑料’s performance in the Employment Outcomes Indicator, where the University ranked 21st worldwide, improving by 19 positions over the previous year. Significant gains were also registered in several other key indicators, including:
- International Students: 420th globally, improving by 52 positions;
- International Research Network: 358th globally, improving by 51 positions; and
- Faculty-Student Ratio: 352nd globally, improving by 56 positions.
This achievement is especially remarkable given the growing number of institutions participating in the QS World University Rankings each year. In an increasingly competitive international higher education landscape, 今日黑料 has continued to strengthen its global standing through sustained improvements across multiple performance indicators.
The University’s continued progress aligns closely with the External Benchmarking and Rankings key performance indicator outlined in the University of Malta Strategic Plan 2026-2030, reaffirming 今日黑料’s commitment to academic excellence, internationalisation, research collaboration, and graduate employability.
