| Abstract: | Introduction Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat, driven partly by inappropriate antibiotic
use. Understanding public knowledge, awareness, and behaviours is critical for designing effective interventions.
This study assessed these dimensions within the Maltese population to inform national AMR awareness and
stewardship strategies. Method A cross-sectional online survey was conducted between 9 and 29 April 2024 among Maltese residents using a questionnaire adapted from the World Health Organization (WHO) Antibiotic Resistance Multi-Coun try Public Awareness Survey. A convenience sampling approach with active demographic monitoring was used across gender, age, and education groups, using census-derived targets as benchmarks. The survey, available in English and Maltese, assessed knowledge of appropriate antibiotic use, awareness of AMR-related terminology, and attitudes towards antibiotic use and resistance. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and non-para metric tests (Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, Chi-Square, Likelihood Ratio) to explore associations between demographic factors and knowledge or behavioural outcomes. ¸é±ð²õ³Ü±ô³Ù²õ³æ20;´¡³æ20;³Ù´Ç³Ù²¹±ô³æ20;´Ç´Ú³æ20;476³æ20;±ð±ô¾±²µ¾±²ú±ô±ð³æ20;°ù±ð²õ±è´Ç²Ô»å±ð²Ô³Ù²õ³æ20;³¦´Ç³¾±è±ô±ð³Ù±ð»å³æ20;³Ù³ó±ð³æ20;²õ³Ü°ù±¹±ð²â³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;·É±ð°ù±ð³æ20;¾±²Ô³¦±ô³Ü»å±ð»å³æ20;¾±²Ô³æ20;³Ù³ó±ð³æ20;²¹²Ô²¹±ô²â²õ¾±²õ.³æ20;´¡³¾´Ç²Ô²µ³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;°ù±ð²õ±è´Ç²Ô»å±ð²Ô³Ù²õ,³æ20;59.9%³æ20;·É±ð°ù±ð³æ20;´Ú±ð³¾²¹±ô±ð³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;³Ù³ó±ð³æ20;±ô²¹°ù²µ±ð²õ³Ù³æ20;²¹²µ±ð³æ20;²µ°ù´Ç³Ü±è³æ20;·É²¹²õ³æ20;25–34³æ20;²â±ð²¹°ù²õ³æ20;(31.9%).³æ20;´¡·É²¹°ù±ð²Ô±ð²õ²õ³æ20;´Ç´Ú³æ20;“a²Ô³Ù¾±²ú¾±´Ç³Ù¾±³¦³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;°ù±ð²õ¾±²õ³Ù²¹²Ô³¦±ðâ€³æ20;·É²¹²õ³æ20;³ó¾±²µ³ó³æ20;(88%)³æ20;²â±ð³Ù³æ20;³Ü²Ô»å±ð°ù²õ³Ù²¹²Ô»å¾±²Ô²µ³æ20;´Ç´Ú³æ20;“a²Ô³Ù¾±³¾¾±³¦°ù´Ç²ú¾±²¹±ô³æ20;°ù±ð²õ¾±²õ³Ù²¹²Ô³¦±ðâ€³æ20;(48%)³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;¾±³Ù²õ³æ20;²¹²ú²ú°ù±ð±¹¾±²¹³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô³æ20;“A²Ñ¸éâ€³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;(21%)³æ20;·É²¹²õ³æ20;±ô´Ç·É±ð°ù.³æ20;²Ñ´Ç²õ³Ù³æ20;±è²¹°ù³Ù¾±³¦¾±±è²¹²Ô³Ù²õ³æ20;(97%)³æ20;²¹²µ°ù±ð±ð»å³æ20;³Ù³ó²¹³Ù³æ20;²¹²Ô³Ù¾±²ú¾±´Ç³Ù¾±³¦²õ³æ20;²õ³ó´Ç³Ü±ô»å³æ20;´Ç²Ô±ô²â³æ20;²ú±ð³æ20;³Ü²õ±ð»å³æ20;·É³ó±ð²Ô³æ20;±è°ù±ð²õ³¦°ù¾±²ú±ð»å,³æ20;²ú³Ü³Ù³æ20;³¾¾±²õ³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;³¦´Ç²Ô³¦±ð±è³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ³æ20;±è±ð°ù²õ¾±²õ³Ù±ð»å:³æ20;16.6%³æ20;²ú±ð±ô¾±±ð±¹±ð»å³æ20;²¹²Ô³Ù¾±²ú¾±´Ç³Ù¾±³¦²õ³æ20;³Ù°ù±ð²¹³Ù³æ20;³¦´Ç±ô»å²õ³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;´Ú±ô³Ü,³æ20;33.6%³æ20;´Ú´Ç°ù³æ20;´Ú±ð±¹±ð°ù,³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;39.9%³æ20;´Ú´Ç°ù³æ20;²õ´Ç°ù±ð³æ20;³Ù³ó°ù´Ç²¹³Ù²õ.³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;°Õ³ó°ù±ð±ð-±ç³Ü²¹°ù³Ù±ð°ù²õ³æ20;(75%)³æ20;¾±²Ô³¦´Ç°ù°ù±ð³¦³Ù±ô²â³æ20;²¹³Ù³Ù°ù¾±²ú³Ü³Ù±ð»å³æ20;°ù±ð²õ¾±²õ³Ù²¹²Ô³¦±ð³æ20;³Ù´Ç³æ20;³Ù³ó±ð³æ20;²ú´Ç»å²â³æ20;²ú±ð³¦´Ç³¾¾±²Ô²µ³æ20;°ù±ð²õ¾±²õ³Ù²¹²Ô³Ù³æ20;°ù²¹³Ù³ó±ð°ù³æ20;³Ù³ó²¹²Ô³æ20;²ú²¹³¦³Ù±ð°ù¾±²¹.³æ20;°¿±ô»å±ð°ù³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;³¾´Ç°ù±ð³æ20;±ð»å³Ü³¦²¹³Ù±ð»å³æ20;°ù±ð²õ±è´Ç²Ô»å±ð²Ô³Ù²õ³æ20;²õ³ó´Ç·É±ð»å³æ20;²õ¾±²µ²Ô¾±´Ú¾±³¦²¹²Ô³Ù±ô²â³æ20;²ú±ð³Ù³Ù±ð°ù³æ20;°ì²Ô´Ç·É±ô±ð»å²µ±ð³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;³¾´Ç°ù±ð³æ20;²¹±è±è°ù´Ç±è°ù¾±²¹³Ù±ð³æ20;²¹³Ù³Ù¾±³Ù³Ü»å±ð²õ³æ20;(±è³æ20;&±ô³Ù;³æ20;0.05),³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;·É³ó±ð°ù±ð²¹²õ³æ20;²â´Ç³Ü²Ô²µ±ð°ù³æ20;²¹»å³Ü±ô³Ù²õ³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;³¾²¹±ô±ð²õ³æ20;·É±ð°ù±ð³æ20;³¾´Ç°ù±ð³æ20;±ô¾±°ì±ð±ô²â³æ20;³Ù´Ç³æ20;³ó´Ç±ô»å³æ20;³¾¾±²õ³¦´Ç²Ô³¦±ð±è³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ.³æ20;°Â³ó¾±±ô±ð³æ20;²Ô±ð²¹°ù±ô²â³æ20;²¹±ô±ô³æ20;°ù±ð²õ±è´Ç²Ô»å±ð²Ô³Ù²õ³æ20;(96.7%)³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;²¹²µ°ù±ð±ð»å³æ20;³Ù³ó²¹³Ù³æ20;¾±²Ô»å¾±±¹¾±»å³Ü²¹±ô²õ³æ20;²õ³ó´Ç³Ü±ô»å³æ20;³Ü²õ±ð³æ20;²¹²Ô³Ù¾±²ú¾±´Ç³Ù¾±³¦²õ³æ20;°ù±ð²õ±è´Ç²Ô²õ¾±²ú±ô²â,³æ20;´Ú±ð·É±ð°ù³æ20;(53.4%)³æ20;±¹¾±±ð·É±ð»å³æ20;´¡²Ñ¸é³æ20;²¹²õ³æ20;²¹³æ20;³¾²¹Âá´Ç°ù³æ20;²µ±ô´Ç²ú²¹±ô³æ20;³¦³ó²¹±ô³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;±ô±ð²Ô²µ±ð³æ20;´Ç°ù³æ20;±ð³æ±è°ù±ð²õ²õ±ð»å³æ20;±è±ð°ù²õ´Ç²Ô²¹±ô³æ20;³¦´Ç²Ô³¦±ð°ù²Ô³æ20;(67.2%)³æ20;²¹²ú´Ç³Ü³Ù³æ20;¾±³Ù²õ³æ20;¾±³¾±è²¹³¦³Ù,³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;´Ç²Ô±ð-³Ù³ó¾±°ù»å³æ20;²ú±ð±ô¾±±ð±¹±ð»å³æ20;³Ù³ó±ð²â³æ20;·É±ð°ù±ð³æ20;²Ô´Ç³Ù³æ20;²¹³Ù³æ20;°ù¾±²õ°ì³æ20;¾±´Ú³æ20;³Ù³ó±ð²â³æ20;³æ0¶Ù;³æ0´¡;³Ü²õ±ð»å³æ20;²¹²Ô³Ù¾±²ú¾±´Ç³Ù¾±³¦²õ³æ20;³¦´Ç°ù°ù±ð³¦³Ù±ô²â.³æ20;¹ó¾±²Ô»å¾±²Ô²µ²õ³æ20;¾±²Ô»å¾±³¦²¹³Ù±ð³æ20;²µ±ð²Ô±ð°ù²¹±ô³æ20;²¹·É²¹°ù±ð²Ô±ð²õ²õ³æ20;²ú³Ü³Ù³æ20;±è±ð°ù²õ¾±²õ³Ù±ð²Ô³Ù³æ20;³¦´Ç²Ô³¦±ð±è³Ù³Ü²¹±ô³æ20;²¹²Ô»å³æ20;»å±ð³¾´Ç²µ°ù²¹±è³ó¾±³¦³æ20;²µ²¹±è²õ. Conclusion Despite high awareness of appropriate antibiotic use, misconceptions about treatment indications and the mechanisms of AMR remain, particularly among younger adults and those with lower education. Improving public understanding of when antibiotics are needed and how resistance develops will be critical to promoting responsible use. These findings provide locally generated evidence to inform targeted public health communication and support AMR prevention efforts in Malta. |
