Artivism power and reproductive justice

Abstract

This dissertation project aims to break the silence surrounding discussions on abortion and reproductive justice by utilising digital art as a platform for critical inquiry and societal reflection. Drawing inspiration from artists like Eliza Bennett, Elektra KB, and Paula Rego, who have employed research-driven methodologies to address social injustices, this research seeks to understand the historical and contemporary context, influential figures, and art's role in political discourse. The study delves into the definitions of abortion and reproductive rights, highlighting the significance of comprehensive reproductive healthcare access. Malta's abortion law is one of the most inhumane in the whole European Union. Despite some artistic responses to the issue, Malta's stringent laws and societal taboos continue to hinder progress in reproductive rights. Through a participatory action research (PAR) methodology and engagement with community events, protests, and discussions, the project integrates diverse perspectives into the exploration of digital art's potential in addressing reproductive justice. By creating a political installation inspired by traditional Maltese banners and incorporating symbolism and imagery, this project seeks to spark public discourse and challenge existing norms surrounding reproductive rights. Through the amplification of marginalised voices and the fostering of critical dialogue, art emerges as a powerful tool for advocacy and activism in the pursuit of reproductive rights for all individuals.
