| DESCRIPTION | Study-unit Objective: The study-unit aims to analyse development in a holistic manner, i.e. beyond the confines of economic growth, encompassing its social, cultural, environmental, and political dimensions within a holistic understanding of well-being. Study-unit Content: Development is often narrowly conceived as economic progress, measured through increases in national output, industrialisation, and material wealth. In this study-unit, however, it is approached as a multidimensional process that encompasses the flourishing of human life and society as a whole. This broader perspective integrates human development, holistic well-being, and the pursuit of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Central themes include the equitable distribution of wealth at both national and international levels, the promotion of dignified work, the eradication of poverty, access to health, education, and justice, the advancement of human freedom and political participation, and the preservation and transformation of cultural heritage. The Maltese development experience will serve as a central case study, drawing on local research, reports, and national strategies and policies. |
