| DESCRIPTION | For Health professionals involved with the management of lower limb tissue loss, a critical component is the assessment and management of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and other related vascular conditions affecting the lower extremities. Effective vascular assessment is fundamental to preventing complications and improving outcomes for individuals with symptomatic PAD and high-risk foot complications, including those with diabetes. This unit provides an in-depth exploration of vascular assessment in the focusing on peripheral arterial disease and the high-risk foot, integrating contemporary evidence, clinical reasoning, and professional judgement. Participants will develop advanced skills in vascular assessment techniques, the interpretation of findings, and formulation of management strategies for complex cases. Teaching is delivered by experienced specialists in vascular and podiatric medicine through lectures, case-based learning, and practical hands-on workshops. Assessment of clinical competence and performance is undertaken throughout to promote reflective, evidence-informed professional development. This unit is available exclusively to qualified podiatrists and nurses. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to develop advanced clinical and professional skills in the vascular assessment of the lower extremities, with a particular focus on peripheral arterial disease and the high-risk foot. Participants will acquire the knowledge and competencies required to critically evaluate vascular status, contribute effectively to multidisciplinary management, and apply evidence-based strategies to reduce morbidity and enhance patient outcomes. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this study-unit, participants will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the medical device physics underpinning vascular measurement medical devices including: ultrasound imaging, colour flow duplex scanning, advantages of vascular ultrasound over ABI, Doppler spectrum analysis, peak systolic and end diastolic velocities (PSV, EDV), pulsatility index (PI) and SVT imaging; 2. Analyse the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and other vascular disorders affecting the lower extremities; 3. Demonstrate and apply advanced vascular assessment techniques relevant to podiatric and nursing practice; 4. Interpret and compare vascular assessment findings to inform evidence-based management of high-risk foot presentations; 5. Integrate professional, ethical, and evidence-based principles to plan safe and effective vascular assessment and management strategies; 6.
