| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will enable students to focus on a specific area of Music Studies and research it in consultation with a supervisor. Students will be required to present a research proposal according to deadlines set by the department. Following departmental approval of the proposal, a supervisor will be designated for each project; students will be expected to work in close consultation with supervisors on their selected research topic. Dissertations will normally be required to be around 9000 words in length. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery over a musical topic; - equip students with the skills needed to independently pursue a variety of musical subjects; - guide students to essential resources; - allow students to apply and extend the knowledge gained throughout their undergraduate study in music; - guide students to an effective practice of independent research; - provide students the resources needed to apply critical thinking to their musicianship and research. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - discuss a range of issues related to a chosen musical topic; - complete a large-scale research project with a substantial degree of originality; - attain a degree of mastery over a range of topics in music scholarship; - recognise the expectations of professional musicianship and music scholarship in the contemporary performing arts. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - assimilate a variety of methods into their music scholarship; - design effective time-management strategies for long-term projects; - analyse advcanced musical repertoire; - review information learned from three years of undergraduate study in music; - systematise an extensive body of knowledge into an individual perspective on music. |
