| DESCRIPTION | Learning Objectives: By the end of the study-unit the students will be able to: - Evaluate contemporary trends and issues affecting women’s reproductive health within social and cultural contexts; - Demonstrate knowledge of the various sociological theories and perspectives relative to midwifery and reproductive health; - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural context which influences women and their lives and in which they become parents; - Demonstrate knowledge on the diversity of family structure, social and demographic changes that impact on the family; - Demonstrate an understanding of how racism, stereotyping, and inequality influence the provision of equitable and culturally responsive practice. Content: - Gender, family, and social change; - Diversity, inequality, and inclusion in maternity care; - Sociocultural perspectives on wmen’s health and reproduction; - Social determinants of reproductive health; - Race, ethnicity and refugee women; - Cultural interpretations of pregnancy and parenting; - Social support and childbirth; - The new reproductive technologies: threat or opportunity. |
