| DESCRIPTION | Din it-taqsima-studju tibni fuq il-ħiliet bażiċi miksuba fil-korsijiet tal-Malti bikri (MAL0013, MAL0014 u MAL0021) bl-għan li l-istudenti jitħaddtu b'aktar ħeffa u kunfidenza fil-komunikazzjoni ta’ kuljum. This study-unit builds on the basic skills acquired in the earlier Maltese courses (MAL0013, MAL0014 and MAL0021), with the aim of enabling students to speak with greater ease and confidence in everyday communication. Students will strengthen their ability to understand spoken Maltese in familiar contexts such as work, school and leisure, including news and current affairs when these are presented clearly. They will learn to take part more actively in conversations, express opinions and participate in discussions on familiar topics with greater spontaneity. They will also learn to recount experiences, describe events, and explain their views clearly and with some detail. By the end of the course, students will be able to interact with native speakers in common, everyday situations, express themselves more fluently and understand the main ideas of extended speech on subjects of personal and even general interest. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to enhance and further develop the Maltese (as a foreign language) speaking skills that are covered in MAL0021. During the sessions the study-unit aims to: - Assist students with understanding the main points of clear, standard spoken Maltese in familiar settings such as work, school, and leisure, as well as in clearly delivered news or media content related to current affairs or topics of personal interest; - Provide an opportunity for students to engage more actively in conversations on various topics by expressing opinions and sustaining dialogue with increased confidence and spontaneity; - Provide an opportunity for students to connect phrases and express themselves clearly when narrating personal experiences, describing events, and offering brief reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar and somewhat unfamiliar matters regularly encountered in everyday settings; - Follow more abstract words and phrases with increasing confidence, usually in their field; - Determine both topic and supporting ideas within clear standard speech on familiar matters in the context of work, school, leisure, and increasingly on popular topics as delivered through broadcast media in slow, clear and standard speech patterns; - Use grammatical structures relatively error-free; - Use simple connectors to link simple sentences together. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Manage most circumstances related to travel and unplanned negotiation of daily needs and interests; - Engage in unrehearsed conversation on familiar topics of personal interest, daily life, and some current events; - Connect simple phrases to develop varying compound/complex statements in order to describe experiences and events in addition to abstract concepts such as goals, wishes, and dreams; - Provide short explanations and statements of opinion regarding planning or preference; - Employ limited summary and paraphrasing techniques to explain themes in video or text for the purposes of conveying opinion.
