| DESCRIPTION | This course introduces key application areas of linguistics and offers practice with different linguistic approaches. The first part focuses on “Language and Society”, exploring how language shapes social identities, reflects power relations, and functions in institutional and media contexts. Among other themes the language of youths, gendered language and language of the media are discussed. The second part covers “Language and Learning”, emphasizing psycholinguistic perspectives on language acquisition—including first language (L1), second language (L2), and multilingualism—combining theoretical frameworks with empirical research. The final part provides an introduction to corpus linguistics and discourse linguistics, where students learn how to use digital language corpora to identify patterns and to empirically test linguistic hypotheses. The course aims to develop a broad understanding of linguistic applications and methodological skills relevant for further studies and professional contexts. In diesem Kurs werden zentrale Anwendungsbereiche der Linguistik vorgestellt und praktisch erprobt. Es wird untersucht, wie Sprache in unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen, kognitiven und technologischen Kontexten wirkt und erforscht werden kann. Der erste Teil widmet sich „Sprache und Gesellschaft“. Hier wird das grundlegende Wissen der Soziolinguistik eingeführt. Dabei geht es darum, wie Sprache soziale Identitäten prägt, Machtverhältnisse widerspiegelt und in institutionellen sowie medialen Kontexten eingesetzt wird. Themen wie Jugendsprache, gendersensible Sprache und Sprache der Medien werden ebenfalls behandelt. Im zweiten Teil „Sprache und Lernen“ liegt der Fokus auf psycholinguistischen Perspektiven des Spracherwerbs – vom Erst- (L1) und Zweitspracherwerb (L2) bis hin zu Mehrsprachigkeit. Dabei werden sowohl theoretische Modelle als auch empirische Forschungsergebnisse betrachtet. Im Rahmen der empirischen Forschung werden auch die Korpuslinguistik und die Diskurslinguistik eingeführt. Studierende lernen, digitale Sprachkorpora zu nutzen, um sprachliche Muster zu identifizieren und zu analysieren sowie die Hypothesen empirisch zu überprüfen. Das Ziel des Kurses ist es, ein Verständnis für die Vielfalt linguistischer Anwendungsfelder zu vermitteln und methodische Kompetenzen zu entwickeln, die für weiterführende Studien und berufliche Tätigkeiten relevant sind. Study-unit Aims: To bridge linguistic theory with real-world language issues, teaching students about the impact of language on society, language learning and analysing language use. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the role of language in social contexts, including how language relates to identity, power, and media; - Comprehend key theories and empirical findings in psycholinguistics, especially regarding first language (L1), second language (L2), and multilingual acquisition; - Gain foundational knowledge of corpus linguistics, including the use and significance of digital language corpora in linguistic research; - Gain knowledge about the application of discourse analysis in empirical studies. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse linguistic phenomena in social and learning contexts using appropriate theoretical frameworks; - Perform basic corpus searches and linguistic data analysis using digital corpora; - Apply linguistic methods to investigate real-world language use and learning situations. |
