| DESCRIPTION | The foundation study-unit gives an in-depth understanding of economic causes and effects of European integration. First, the topic is introduced with reference to the history of European economic integration. Second, economic and political-economy aspects of preferential trade liberalization and customs union formation are identified and discussed from a European perspective. Third, economic implications of factor market integration are identified with particular focus placed on the functioning of the Single market. Fourth, the optimal currency area and other analytical aspects of monetary integration are studied. Study-Unit Aims: Main Economic theories, concepts and applications to European Integration are placed in focus, including those relevant to analyze preferential trade agreements, factor mobility and monetary integration. The study-unit provides a foundation for the understanding on Economic approaches to European integration that also serves as a basis and companion to other Economics study-units followed in the course. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe and explain the economic fundaments, mechanisms and outcomes of analytical approaches to European Integration; - Identify and discuss their applicability in different contexts; - Outline and analyse research evidence on key effects of European Integration (e.g. economic growth effects of EU accession). 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Evaluate the relevance of analytical approaches that have shaped European Integration; - Apply analytical approaches to current developments; - Analyze economic and political-economy aspects of European integration.
