| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is structured around a placement with a publishing organisation that will offer the student the opportunity to work for a pre-arranged number of hours on a project (or projects) that involve editing tasks stretching from receipt of a manuscript (or manuscripts) through to publication. The student will work (i)under mentoring mediated by a contact within the organisation, and (ii) an academic involved in the MA programme on Creative Writing and Editing, who will also offer supervising tutorials. Among the tasks involved are correspondence with authors at various stages of a project's completion; processing of initial pitches and preparatory feedback on submissions received; line editing; recasting recommendations on manuscript enhancement; copy-editing; proofreading and management of proof corrections; metadata preparation. A list of partner publishers will be made available by the end of the first semester of the programme, with confirmation of the approved placement scheduled in the second semester following a prior meeting involving the student, the mentor and the academic (and, where appropriate and for ethical reasons, the author(s) whose work is being edited). Students taking this unit are expected to keep a journal of reflective practice based on the placement hours, which will feature as part of the submission of the portfolio for assessment of the unit. The journal should be between 5000-12000 words in length (subject to the mentor's and supervisor's briefs). The portfolio should also include a copy of the publication(s) worked on (finalised in published or proof-corrected form) and a full record, with appropriate supporting copies and documentation, of the various editing stages and tasks undertaken. Study-unit Aims: - To provide mentored and supported practice, in a recognised publishing environment, of the editorial processes involved in taking submissions from pitch to publication; - To provide mentored and tutored experience in line editing, copy editing, proofreading, proofs correction and metadata preparation, all in a real-world publishing space; - To provide a window into the expectations and pressures around editing as it takes place in a professional environment; - To provide mentored and tutored practice in higher-order manuscript editing, where this involves recommendations to authors on enhancements that might be considered. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Work on successive stages of projects being taken from pitch to publication; - Demonstrate understanding of, and proficiency in, line editing, proofreading, proofs correction and metadata preparation; - Demonstrate an ability to work across different editing platforms and relevant software; - Demonstrate an ability to work effectively and responsibly with AI as and where this might be appropriate on editing tasks, and to be discerning when assessing that appropriateness; - Demonstrate insight and tact when handling matters involving recommendations on manuscript enhancement; - Conduct editorial work in a manner that meets the expectations of a professional publishing space and of corresponding authors; - Demonstrate an ability to work effectively, rigorously and expeditiously on professional editing tasks. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Reliably enter into tactful and appropriate communication with corresponding authors; - Conduct reliable and well-judged line-editing, proofreading, proofs correction and metdata preparation, doing so across different platforms and relevant software; - Work effectively with a publishing team, in a manner respecting deadlines at all stages; - Demonstrate discernment in the identification of aspects of a manuscript that may require enhancement, as well as an ability to follow up on them with authors in a sensitive and supportive manner.
