| DESCRIPTION | Genre—Intensive Practice and Critical Reflection is an exit-stage, extended creative writing component that adopts a directed mentoring approach and entails the writing of a shorter creative text or contained portfolio of texts to be produced independently by the candidate under the regular guidance of their assigned mentor. The expected output will hence consist of a creative piece or portfolio that may be reasonably developed and concluded within the time-frame of the study-unit. The creative text (or portfolio of shorter texts) may take the form of one to two works of short fiction, a short poetry cycle, a non-fictional work or creative essay, a condensed playscript, an early excerpt from a planned longer novel or novella, or another creative piece (or portfolio) to be agreed upon at proposal stage. The completed output (single text or portfolio) will be of ca. 9000 words or their equivalent, depending on which genre or form the candidate is working with. Candidates will work independently and meet with their mentor for regular scheduled tuition and update sessions throughout the semester. Choice of genre is at the candidate’s discretion following discussion with their assigned mentor. Students will be expected to demonstrate regular progress on the creative component/body of work at each directed mentoring session. They will also be required to keep a written record of insights accrued at each stage of the creative process—from prewriting and early drafting to final editing—and to raise these as points for discussion at each mentoring session. The final text/portfolio produced in the course of this study-unit will be assessed in partial fulfilment (30 ECTS) of the Option 2 (60 ECTS) package on Year 2 of the programme, and therefore in tandem with study-unit ENG 5087 ‘Editing: Intensive Practice and Critical Reflection' (30 ECTS). Study-unit Aims: - Enable students to conceive, develop, and complete a shorter creative text or coherent portfolio of texts within a defined timeframe; - Foster advanced, independent creative writing practice within a chosen genre or form, supported by directed mentoring; - Encourage sustained engagement with drafting, revision, and creative-text / genre-based editing as integral stages of the creative process; - Develop students’ capacity for critical self-reflection on their creative practice through systematic process documentation; - Support informed decision-making regarding genre, form, and technique through mentor-guided discussion; - Promote professional working practices, including regular progress reporting and responsiveness to feedback; - Integrate creative production with critical reflection in preparation for exit-level postgraduate assessment. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the formal, thematic, and stylistic conventions of their chosen genre or creative form; - Understand and articulate the stages of the creative writing process, from conceptualisation and drafting to revision and final editing; - Critically understand the relationship between creative practice and reflective inquiry within postgraduate-level writing; - Develop practices and skills that enable their writing to navigate more effectively within the publishing world; - Demonstrate informed awareness of how mentoring, feedback, and editorial intervention shape creative development; - Show contextual understanding of their creative work in relation to contemporary creative writing practices and professional standards. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Advanced creative writing skills, including the ability to craft, structure, and refine a substantial creative text or portfolio; - Critical self-evaluation skills, enabling students to assess their own creative work and make informed revisions; - Research and inquiry skills, applied to the exploration of genre conventions, stylistic choices, and creative strategies; - Communication skills, demonstrated through effective discussion of work-in-progress and reflective insights with a mentor; - Time-management and project-planning skills, including the ability to independently manage a long-term creative project to completion; - Reflective and analytical skills transferable across disciplines, supporting professional development, lifelong learning, and creative problem-solving.
