| DESCRIPTION | This unit offers students the opportunity of mentored and tutored participation in manuscript preparation of up to two of the following: a general or special issue of an academic journal; a monograph; an edited volume; a textbook; a work of fiction; a work of creative nonfiction; a journal paper; a book chapter. The texts in question emerge from the various research and writing projects undertaken within the Department of English. In some circumstances, and by agreement with the course coordinators, the tasks might also involve projects undertaken by other academics or entities within the University of Malta, or, alternatively, projects submitted to publishers partnering the programme. Students thereby acquire meaningful and productive experience in the editorial tasks involved across the publication of academic work and/or fiction or nonfiction writing. These include, but are not limited to, correspondence with the contributors to a journal or edited volume; communication on manuscript enhancement; line editing; proofreading; proofs correction; metadata preparation; compilation and checking of references, bibliographies, indexes, etc. Across all tasks, students will be coached in -- and will be expected to demonstrate -- insight, tact and sensitivity, accuracy and an eye for detail, respect for deadlines, and the ability to make context-appropriate suggestions on manuscript enhancement. The mentoring is provided by the lead author/editor of a scholarly work, or by a publishing representative in the case of nonacademic work. The tutorials are led by an academic involved in the MA in Creative Writing and Editing. Assessment consists of a portfolio that keeps copies of all editing tasks undertaken, as well a reflective practice journal. The latter should not exceed 5000 words. Study-unit Aims: - To provide mentored and supported practice, in a recognised academic or publishing environment, of the editorial processes involved in taking a publication project to rigorous completion; - To provide mentored and tutored experience in line editing, copy editing, proofreading, proofs correction and metadata preparation, all in real-world academic and publishing spaces; - To provide a window into the expectations and pressures around editing as it takes place in an academic and/or professional publishing environment; - To provide mentored and tutored practice in higher-order manuscript editing, particularly where this involves enhancements to submissions; - To provide experience in communication and liaison between authors and editors; - To provide a window into the similarities and differences across academic and nonacademic publication. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Work on successive stages of projects -- in different genres, whether academic or otherwise -- being taken from pitch to publication; - Demonstrate understanding of, and proficiency in, line editing, proofreading, proofs correction and metadata preparation; - Demonstrate ability to work with editing platforms and software; - Demonstrate insight and tact, as well as sensitiveness to the contexts involved, when handling matters involving recommendations on manuscript enhancement; - Conduct editorial work in a manner that meets the expectations of corresponding authors, academic environments and/or professional publishing spaces; - Demonstrate an ability to work effectively, courteously and rigorously on a range of editing tasks, and in a manner which respects deadlines and professional protocols. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Reliably enter into tactful and appropriate communication with corresponding authors; - Conduct reliable and well-judged line-editing, proofreading, proofs correction and metdata preparation, doing so across different platforms and relevant software; - Reliably check and, where appropriate, amend referencing, bibliographies,acknowledgments, captions, tables, images and figures; - Reliably compile indexes; - Work effectively within an academic and/or a publishing team, in a manner respecting deadlines at all stages; - Demonstrate discernment in the identification of aspects of a manuscript that may require enhancement, as well as an ability to follow up on them with authors in a sensitive and supportive manner; - Oversee aspects of tasks like the above.
