| DESCRIPTION | The Extended Writing Project: Creative Practice and Critical Reflection is one of the culminating study-units of the MA programme and is intended to integrate the creative and critical approaches developed across earlier units. Students are required to conceive and complete a substantial, original work of creative writing, accompanied by a reflective and critically informed commentary. Working under academic supervision, students will undertake sustained independent creative practice supported by relevant reading and research. The creative project may take a variety of approved forms, including a short story collection or novella, a novel extract with a coherent narrative arc, a poetry collection or sequence, a work of creative nonfiction or literary journalism, a book-length essay or cycle of essays, or a hybrid or experimental project that combines genres or modes. Digitally native or multimodal creative projects may also be proposed, subject to approval and appropriate critical framing. The creative component will normally be approximately 25,000 words, or an equivalent sustained body of work in other forms, such as a poetry collection of appropriate scope and coherence, or a multimodal or digitally native project of comparable creative and intellectual demand. The accompanying reflective commentary, of 3,000–5,000 words, requires students to reflect critically on their creative practice, including formal and conceptual choices, and to situate the project within relevant literary, cultural, or theoretical contexts. Together, the creative and reflective components demonstrate advanced creative practice, critical engagement, and intellectual independence appropriate to postgraduate study. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the Extended Writing Project: Creative Practice and Critical Reflection are to: - provide students with the opportunity to produce a substantial and original work of creative writing through sustained independent practice; - enable students to integrate creative practice with critical and reflective engagement informed by relevant literary and theoretical contexts; - support the development of advanced skills in planning, structuring, and sustaining a long-form creative project; - foster intellectual independence and critical self-awareness appropriate to postgraduate level study; - allow students to consolidate and apply knowledge and skills acquired across the taught components of the programme; - prepare students for further research, publication-oriented practice, or related professional pathways through the completion of a coherent and critically grounded creative project. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply specialised and advanced knowledge of creative writing practices to produce a substantial and original work demonstrating a high level of conceptual, formal, and stylistic awareness; - design, plan, and sustain an independent creative project, exercising originality, autonomy, and responsibility appropriate to postgraduate study; - critically reflect on and evaluate their own creative practice, making informed judgements about formal and conceptual choices; - integrate relevant literary, cultural, and theoretical perspectives in order to situate the creative work within appropriate disciplinary contexts; - demonstrate advanced critical thinking and creative skills in the development and completion of a long-form creative project; - communicate complex creative and critical ideas clearly and coherently in both creative and reflective modes, in line with academic and professional standards. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop and sustain advanced creative writing skills, demonstrating control of form, structure, voice, and style across an extended project; - plan and complete an independent long-form creative project through effective time management and self-directed work; - apply critical and reflective thinking to evaluate and refine their own creative practice; - undertake and integrate relevant research to inform creative and reflective work; - communicate complex creative and critical ideas clearly and coherently in written form; - exercise intellectual autonomy, responsibility, and professional judgement appropriate to postgraduate level study.
