| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides an advanced, workshop-based environment for the development of students' creative and critical writing. Centred on structured peer-review and lecturer-led discussion, the unit enables sustained engagement with works-in-progress across a range of forms, allowing students to bring writing that is most relevant to their individual pathways within the MA programme. Indeed, students will be given individualised reading lists which can serve as indicators of the kind of writing students might wish to look at to familarise themselves with fine examples of what they're respectively attempting. Workshops combine asynchronous online preparation and editing with in-class discussion. Students will circulate drafts in advance of each workshop via the Virtual Learning Environment, where peers are required to read and comment on one another’s work. These written responses form the basis for in-depth workshop sessions and subsequent editing. The unit emphasises writing as a process rather than a product, encouraging students to adopt a drafting-based approach in which revision, editing, and critical self-assessment are central. Alongside workshops, the unit incorporates focused theoretical and practical input on creative writing, critical writing, and editorial practice. By situating individual writing practices within a collective workshop framework, the study-unit develops students' ability to articulate evaluative judgements, respond constructively to feedback, and refine their work through iterative revision. Study-unit Aims: - To provide students with an advanced workshop-based framework for the development of creative and critical writing through sustained drafting, peer review, and revision; - To develop students' confidence and competence in participating in, and contributing constructively to, postgraduate-level writing workshops; - To familiarise students with a range of creative, critical, and editorial practices, including drafting, redrafting, peer review, close reading, reflective commentary, and editing; - To cultivate an understanding of writing as a process-oriented activity that is shaped through dialogue, feedback, and iterative revision rather than as a finished product; - To encourage students to engage critically and ethically with questions of voice, judgement, authorship, and responsibility when responding to their own work and the work of others; - To support students in consolidating sustainable writing habits and workshop practices appropriate to advanced study and long-term engagement with creative and critical writing beyond the MA programme. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - define the principles underpinning advanced creative and critical writing practices, including drafting, revision, close reading, peer review, and editorial judgement; - recognise how creative and critical writing are shaped by theoretical perspectives, critical-creative approaches, and wider cultural, social, and institutional contexts; - identify the conventions, expectations, and pedagogical functions of workshop-based environments and writing communities at postgraduate level; - demonstrate informed awareness of the stages of drafting, redrafting, and self-editing, and of the principles guiding iterative development of written work; - discuss the roles of editorial processes, evaluative criteria, and publication contexts in shaping contemporary creative and critical writing; - reflect critically on their own writing practices, developmental trajectories, and long-term writerly objectives within a sustained postgraduate framework. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply a range of creative, critical, and editorial techniques to their own writing across different forms, genres, and modes appropriate to their pathway; - develop and sustain an independent writing practice supported by effective planning, drafting, revision, and self-editing strategies; - produce clear, constructive, and analytically grounded feedback on peers' work within online and in-person workshop environments; - revise and refine works-in-progress in response to peer and lecturer feedback, demonstrating informed editorial judgement; - identify and address stylistic, structural, and conceptual issues—such as coherence, abstraction, redundancy, and diction—during the revision process; - evaluate the strengths, limitations, and developmental potential of works-in-progress and make informed decisions about further drafting, revision, or submission.
