| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides an introduction to, and practice opportunities in, different kinds of editing. These include line editing and copyediting (and the differences in regard to proofreading), as well as selected stages and aspects of manuscript editing, magazine/journal editing and volume editing. The study-unit starts with considerations relating to the editing of one's own work and that of peers across familiar genres (e.g. academic composition, essays and/or opinion pieces, feature articles, short fiction, poetry). It explains the differences between editing within academic contexts and editing requirements across various areas of publishing and other professional environments. It then moves to exercises in copyediting, both on practice texts but also on the opportunities afforded by exposure to different editorial projects within the Department of English and its collaborating partners (conditional upon due permissions). Students are also introduced to the handling of pitches, proposals, abstracts, etc., as well as to aspects of the successive stages in the completion of a publication or edited project. The study-unit provides opportunities to observe and participate in the completion of one such project, and to learn about the perspectives and experiences of publishers' representatives as well as other local and international editors. Study-unit Aims: - To provide an introduction to different kinds of editing; - To provide practice exercises in line editing and copyediting; - To provide opportunities for observation of, and practice in, the editing of short pieces within more than one genre. (Note: here and elsewhere below, the phrase "short pieces" refers to texts that extend to 1000 words or less); - To provide opportunities for observation of, and participation in, selected stages in the editing of a longer project; - To provide opportunities for practice in the handling of pitches, proposals, abstracts, etc.; - To provide practice in correct use of different house styles; - To provide opportunities for meeting and learning from the perspectives of publishers' representatives and other editors; - To provide opportunities in the handling of different editorial tools and software. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Conduct copyediting of texts within designated genres; - Conduct line editing of texts within designated genres; - Discern the different challenges pertaining to a variety of editing tasks; - Contribute to editorial work within a guiding and mentoring environment that is engaged in the publication of short pieces; - Contribute to editorial work within a guiding and mentoring environment that is engaged in the publication of a longer project; - Demonstrate tact but also firmness in the indication to authors of how a text might best be altered; - Work confidently with editing tools and software; - Use different house styles in their respective appropriate settings, doing so with precision and discernment. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Assess the different kinds of editing input and house-style considerations required by different texts and publishing projects; - Independently carry out line editing and copyediting of shorter pieces within designated genres; - Assist in the editing of a larger project and form part of a mentoring Production team within a recognised publishing or editing environment; - Respond tactfully to authorial expectations regarding submitted texts; - Work with specific editing software.
