| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit comprises advanced tuition sessions exploring key techniques in the writing of fiction, poetry, and selected aspects of non-fiction. It opens with perspectives on building a story-world, developing voice and point of view, shaping character and memory, setting and place. Attention will be given to sustaining confidence in both character and narrative voice, as well as harnessing place and recall in creative non-fictional contexts. Later sessions will address dialogue in short fiction, the creation of tone, mood and atmosphere, pacing and tempo. The unit then turns to core skills and techniques in writing poetry, focusing on voice and address, sourcing metaphor, crafting the poetic image, mastering rhythm and sound, and trial-reading the text. Each session begins with a focused discussion of the topic, followed by a mentored, immersive writing exercise. A peer learning approach enables participants to respond both to the tutor’s insights and to one another’s evolving creative work. Participants will be able to develop a creative text of their choice during the first part of the study-unit, and to work on a second creative piece across the latter part. The study-unit includes two masterclasses by international authors of repute: a mid-unit session on fiction and a poetry-focused masterclass towards the end of the unit. Study-unit Aims: - To develop students’ proficiency in core techniques of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction writing, with particular attention to voice, point of view, character, setting, and narrative construction; - To cultivate stylistic confidence and versatility through guided exploration of dialogue, tone, mood, atmosphere, rhythm, sound, and poetic imagery; - To support students in producing original creative work, enabling them to initiate, draft, and refine two substantial creative texts across the duration of the study-unit; - To foster collaborative and reflective creative practice through peer learning, mentored writing exercises, and engagement with masterclasses delivered by established authors. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate a critical and practical understanding of core narrative and poetic techniques, including voice, point of view, character development, setting, tone, mood, and atmosphere; - Explain the principles underpinning effective dialogue, narrative tempo, and structural shaping within short fiction and other creative forms; - Identify and evaluate key poetic tools, such as metaphor, imagery, rhythm, and sound, and understand how these contribute to meaning and effect within the poetic text; - Describe and reflect on the processes involved in developing original creative work, including story-world building, drafting, revision, and the application of peer and tutor feedback. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Produce coherent and engaging creative texts that demonstrate effective use of narrative, poetic, and stylistic techniques across fiction, poetry, and non-fiction writing; - Apply critical self-reflection and editorial skills to revise and refine creative work, integrating feedback from peers and tutors; - Communicate ideas clearly and collaboratively in workshop discussions, demonstrating attentive listening, constructive critique, and professional engagement with others’ creative outputs; - Manage independent creative projects effectively, demonstrating planning, time management, and the ability to sustain a writing process from initial concept to developed draft.
