| DESCRIPTION | This unit offers advanced practice in the study and writing of selected literary forms and genres. Beginning with an introductory seminar, it continues through five distinct cycles, each combining a lecture, master class, or interview with a writer followed by a practical workshop, and concludes with sessions devoted to self-editing and peer review of students’ creative work. The unit encourages students to understand, engage with, and practise key elements of different forms and genres. The specific focus of the cycles may vary from year to year, but a representative sample might include: voice in the essay; imagery in poetry; characterisation in the novel; perspective and framing in memoir; structure and pacing in the short story; and dialogue in dramatic writing. In each cycle, students will attend sessions with established practitioners, study and discuss exemplary texts, and engage in guided exercises of imitation, transformation, and original composition. Assessment is based on a portfolio of work developed from workshop writing and related in-class exercises. By the end of the unit, students will have broadened their repertoire across forms and genres and refined their creative and editorial practice. Study-unit Aims: - To explore how different literary forms and genres shape creative expression; - To develop a deeper awareness of craft through focused attention to form and technique; - To experiment with writing across multiple genres and hybrid modes; - To apply imitation, transformation, and original composition as creative methods; - To integrate reading, discussion, and practice as complementary aspects of the writer’s craft; - To expand the writer’s versatility and confidence in adapting to varied writing contexts. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and analyse the defining features and conventions of a range of literary forms and genres; - Recognise how established writers deploy craft elements to shape their work; - Evaluate the relationship between imitation, transformation, and originality in creative practice; - Articulate a reflective awareness of the processes through which creative texts are generated, revised, and refined. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply techniques learned from exemplary texts and practitioners in their own creative writing; - Compose original work across a range of forms and genres; - Engage effectively in workshops through constructive critique and discussion; - Integrate feedback from peers and tutors into the development of their creative portfolio; - Present a cohesive sample of creative work that demonstrates stylistic control and adaptability across genres.
