| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit focuses on the political dimensions of teaching ethics and how it is conducive to a pluralistic democratic environment in the ethics class. It aims towards a philosophical and sociological understanding of 1) teachers of ethics as political and ethical practitioners and 2) the extent to which they use their power and responsibility to create democratic conversations. Critical issues that surround the different philosophical and political connotations between deliberative and agonistic democratic conversations offer pedagogical insights on how they can variously be used in teaching ethics in schools and in engaging students in open and free debate. It will explain the responsibilities of teachers for creating a safe and caring environment and provide their students with opportunities to discuss visions and ideas that are different from their own without animosity It also aims to create democratic spaces where pluralism is valued to avoid assimilative approaches that silence voices, marginalize minorities and devalue differences. Examples and case studies will be used to support students teacher navigate challenging conversations such as when students in the classroom express sexist, racist, homophobic or fundamentalist beliefs, who are disinclined to discuss, and argue or who are disrespectful and uncaring towards others. In sum this study-unit introduces students teachers to the possibilities of political education through the teaching of ethics. Study-Unit Aims: The main aims of this study-unit are to help student teachers of ethics: - Understand their role as political educators; - Reflect on their responsibilities in creating safe democratic pluralistic environments; - Think on how to create conversations that express different values and ideas; - Engage and apply pedagogies of difference. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appraise the relations between politics and ethics; - Outline the different political theories about democracy and democratic conversations; - Describe how to sustain fruitful and respectful relations; - Examine the different ways conversations can be used for democratic education in the ethics class; - Identify the problems of assimilation; - Describe pedagogies that encourage pluralism in the ethics class. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design learning experiences that foster open, pluralistic debate; - Create democratic classroom environments that value multiple perspectives; - Evaluate pedagogical approaches that promote pluralism and prevent assimilationist tendencies; - Analyse the philosophical and sociological concepts relevant to the ethics and politics of teaching ethics; - Problematize assimilative agencies in the ethics class; - Create opportunities in the ethics class where disagreement becomes a productive pedagogical force; - Use of student diverse values as educational resources for the teaching of ethics. |
