| DESCRIPTION | This unit is designed to provide participants with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required in fashion design and garment construction. Through a combination of hands-on activities and creative learning experiences, participants develop confidence while gaining essential technical and design competencies in a supportive and inclusive environment. Alongside garment construction, the course explores the creative aspects of fashion design. Participants develop an understanding of colour theory, seasonal colour analysis, sustainable fashion principles, and visual communication techniques. They create moodboards, produce fashion illustrations using templates, annotate design ideas, and develop a small capsule collection that reflects their creativity and understanding of the design process. Throughout the course, learners are encouraged to think creatively, communicate ideas effectively, and work both independently and collaboratively. The programme fosters confidence, critical thinking, and attention to detail while promoting sustainable approaches to fashion design and garment production. By the end of the course, participants will have developed a solid foundation in garment construction and fashion design, together with the practical experience and creative skills needed to continue developing their knowledge within the fashion and textiles sector. OBJECTIVES - Demonstrate safe working practices by applying workshop health and safety procedures and using sewing equipment correctly. - Take accurate body measurements and interpret basic sewing patterns to plan and construct a simple garment. - Construct a pair of basic trousers using appropriate garment construction techniques, including cutting, assembling, fitting, and finishing. - Apply quality control techniques to assess garment fit, finishing, and overall construction quality. - Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental fashion design principles, including colour theory, seasonal colour analysis, and moodboard development. - Communicate fashion ideas visually through template drawing, garment annotation, and the development of a small capsule collection. UNIT MATERIAL Participants will be provided with a range of learning resources, including lecture presentations, practical demonstrations, instructional handouts, sewing patterns, design templates, and worksheets. Practical sessions will make use of sewing machines, garment construction tools, fabrics, and haberdashery materials to support the development of technical sewing skills. Additional resources, including moodboard materials, colour references, sample garments, and online learning materials, will be used to enhance participants' understanding of garment construction, fashion design, and sustainable fashion practices. |
