| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to Cuban salsa dance as a form of physical expression, cultural exploration, and social interaction. Through guided practice, students will develop body awareness, musicality, and coordination while exploring Cuban styles within the broader world of salsa. The unit also encourages students to stay present in the moment, connect with others, and discover a potential new passion. Additionally, it offers insight into Cuban culture and the Afro-Cuban roots that influence Cuban salsa dance traditions. Objectives: - Develop greater awareness and control of one’s body through movement - Explore and learn the fundamentals of Cuban salsa dance styles - Improve rhythm, coordination, and musical interpretation - Encourage presence, self-expression, and confidence in movement - Promote social interaction and group engagement - Introduce students to Cuban culture, Cuban styles, and Afro influences - Inspire curiosity and appreciation for global dance forms Unit Material: - Introductory materials on Cuban salsa dance history, Cuban styles, and Afro-Cuban cultural background - Explanations of key Cuban salsa dance styles and their Afro roots - Selected readings and short texts on Cuban salsa dance traditions - Music playlists featuring traditional and contemporary Cuban and Afro-Cuban rhythms - Video demonstrations and guided practice sessions Assessment: Assessment is based on student participation and attendance. Students are required to attend at least 50% of the sessions to successfully complete the unit. |
