DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with a practice-oriented introduction to visualisation and visualization through the collaborative creation of immersive environments grounded in real-world spatial, environmental and cultural datasets. Students work in small multidisciplinary teams to analyse a defined case study and develop interactive visual and immersive outputs that communicate complex information effectively to non-specialist audiences.

The unit explores visualisation as the intentional design of visual and multi-sensory representations, and visualization as the cognitive and perceptual process through which users interpret and understand these representations. Emphasis is placed on how visual, auditory and haptic elements influence perception, spatial understanding and engagement.

Students engage with contemporary immersive technologies—including VR, AR, MR, XR and emerging interfaces—and apply them within structured project workflows. The unit promotes responsible data use, ethical representation and stakeholder awareness, preparing students to operate within professional environments that require collaboration, accountability and clarity of communication.

- Develop students’ hands-on experience of tools across the data-cycle
- Provide hands-on experience in creating immersive and interactive visual environments
- Develop students’ ability to collaborate on real-world, data-driven case studies
- Integrate cognitive, perceptual and multi-sensory principles into visualization practice
- Promote responsible and ethical use of spatial and thematic data
- Prepare students for professional and advanced immersive design contexts

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the relationship between visualisation, visualization and human cognition
- Understand how immersive environments support interpretation of complex datasets
- Identify the role of multi-sensory input in enhancing spatial understanding
- Recognise ethical, legal and contextual considerations in data-driven visualization
- Distinguish between human-created and AI-assisted visual representations

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically evaluate immersive tools and technologies
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team on a shared case study
- Design and develop immersive visual environments using real datasets
- Apply cognitive and perceptual principles to visualization design decisions
- Communicate complex information clearly to diverse stakeholders
- Reflect critically on the impact and responsibility of immersive representations
