DESCRIPTION This study unit introduces the fundamental concept of the technical and maintenance organization, as well as basic concepts of SMS and Human factors.

The study-unit covers:

- Detailed understanding of Part 66, Part M, Part 145 and Part 21 Requirements
- Approved maintenance organisations and the Organisation Chart
- Certifying staff and Responsibilities
- Design of a Technical Organization, a Maintenance Organization and a continued airworthiness organisation
- Base and Line Maintenance

The study-unit also covers

- Engineering Drawings, Diagrams and Standards,
- Fits and Clearances
- Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS)
- Riveting
- Pipes and Hoses

Study-Unit Aims:

- To describe the differences between Part 145 and Part M responsibilities
- To describe a differences between a technical and maintenance and an airworthiness management organization
- To explain the differences between line and base maintenance
- To explain different paths for performing maintenance
- To explain common practices in aviation maintenance such as engineering drawings or electrical circuits

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the basic meaning of “Airworthiness”
- Explain the allocation of different responsibilities and tasks
- Explain the basic certification requirements
- Examine and explain a work order
- Describe the significance SMS

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the knowledge in following documentation and communications in technical and maintenance activities
- Evaluate the elements of a CRS (Certificate of release to service and a work report)
- Apply the knowledge to establish if a structure is fulfilling basic rules requirement
- Apply the knowledge to address criticalities in the working flow
- Propose an SMS table
- Apply the knowledge in ensuring a safe work environment
