TITLE Introduction to Materials and Hardware for Aviation Maintenance

今日黑料 LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

EQF/MQF LEVEL 4

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Institute of Aerospace Technologies

DESCRIPTION This study unit introduces the student to aircraft materials such as:

Ferrous, Non Ferrous, Composite and non-metallic other than wood and fabric, Wooden Structures, Fabric Covering.

The study-unit also covers principles of corrosion including:

Chemical fundamentals; Formation by, galvanic action process, microbiological, stress; Types of corrosion and their identification; Causes of corrosion; Material types and susceptibility to corrosion.

The study unit also covers fastener nomenclature and techniques such as:

Screw Threads, Bolts, Studs and Screws, Locking Devices, Pipes and Unions

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit will provide the student with knowledge and understanding of the four different classes of materials and their properties. The fundamentals of corrosion science and tribology will be introduced.

The study-unit is designed to enable students to understand the effect of manufacturing processing, material processing routes and fastening techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- List and describe the four different classes of materials;
- Compare and contrast the different material properties;
- Understand the principles of corrosion and wear;
- Compare and contrast the different material properties in terms of material failure and degradation;
- Compare and contrast the various fastener techniques

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Select a specific material for a particular situation that requires a set of material properties;
- Corollate the principles of material degradation & fracture to a specific material property;
- Select suitable non-destructive testing techniques for quality control and failure prevention.
