DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the structure of the atmosphere, basic aerodynamics and the principles of flight. It covers parts of EASA Part 66 Module 8 (Aerodynamics) and parts of Module 11 (Turbine Aeroplane Aerodynamics). Specifically, the study unit describes:

- The physics of the atmosphere,
- Principles of aerodynamics: The boundary layer; laminar and turbulent flow.
- The aerofoil anatomy: Chord, camber and thickness ratio.
- The relationship between lift and drag: Lift coefficient, the lift curve, angle of attack, the equation of lift, the definition of stall, the Drag coefficient, the drag equation, the drag polar curve.
- The anatomy of the wing, high lift devices (slats and flaps), spoilers and ailerons. Wing vortices and winglet case studies.
- Flight stability, longitudinal, lateral and directional stability.
- Operation and effect of roll, pitch and yaw.
- High speed flight: the definition of the speed of sound, subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight, definition of Mach number, shock waves, the effect of wing sweepback and critical Mach numbers.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study unit is to introduce aircraft maintenance trainees to the basics of the atmosphere and the principles of flight. To achieve this, the study-unit:

- Introduces the physics of the atmosphere,
- Describes the anatomy of the aerofoil and the anatomy of the three-dimensional wing,
- Describes the principles of lift and drag,
- Describe aircraft operational control and stability,
- Describe the complexities of high speed flight.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recall the layers of the atmosphere.
- Describe the model of the International Standard Atmosphere.
- Describe the principles of aerodynamics.
- Describe the anatomy of the aerofoil.
- Explain the theory of lift and drag.
- Describe the anatomy of the three-dimensional wing.
- Describe the principles and operation of stability.
- Describe the effects of high-speed flight.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the knowledge and understanding of the effects of aerodynamics on the basic aircraft design and layout.
- Read basic graphs of aircraft performance
- Compare and contrast various features of the aircraft as a result of aerodynamic principles
