Summary
Considering that Malta has the highest rate of HIV diagnosis in the EU, the silence about HIV is deafening. With this work, the researcher wanted to break this silence, to give visibility to the invisible, the stigmatised, and to ensure that the stories of those living with HIV are heard, unlike the stories of those who contracted HIV and died of AIDS in the past, whose stories and voices were buried with their shame.
Deguara sociologically explores the experiences of nine gay men, the walking works of ART, who navigate HIV at a time when antiretroviral treatment (ART) transformed HIV from a deadly virus into a chronic disease, enabling them to lead a ‘normal’ life. Yet this sense of normality is clouded by the dark shadow of stigma that still pervades Maltese society, forty years after the AIDS pandemic.
