Event: Public Talk - The Role of AI and Machine Learning in Understanding the Universe
Date: Wednesday 25 November 2026
Time: 18:30-19:30
Venue: LT1, Lecture Centre, University of Malta
Discover how artificial intelligence and machine learning are helping astronomers make sense of vast amounts of telescope data, map the Universe, and uncover rare cosmic objects.
This public talk explores how these tools are changing our understanding of what the Universe is made of and how it evolved, alongside the opportunities and limitations they bring.

Dr Farida Farsian is a researcher at INAF’s Astrophysical Observatory of Catania, specialising in quantum computing and machine learning for astrophysics and cosmology.
She holds a PhD in Astrophysics and Cosmology from SISSA and has a background in high-performance computing and astronomical data analysis. Her research explores how quantum and classical computing can work together to detect cosmic events, identify gravitational lenses and investigate the history of the Universe.
The lecture is aimed at a general audience; no background in physics or astronomy is required. There will be time for questions at the end.
