This event is part of the first edition of the Ġimgħa tal-Malti (Maltese Language Week), taking place from 12 to 18 October 2026, with a public talk, a quiz, activities for students, and a campaign across radio, television and social media.

The initiative invites everyone, including those learning Maltese, to use and enjoy the language in everyday life. The week coincides with World Dictionary Day on 16 October and with the anniversaries of the birth and death of Dun Karm, Malta’s national poet.

During the week, the Dizzjunarju.mt team will also launch an original song on social media to bring the public closer to the dictionary. The music is by Daniel Cauchi, who placed second in the most recent edition of Mużika Mużika, with lyrics by Prof. Michael Spagnol and Bradley Cachia.

A number of familiar faces will also take part in the celebrations, including Keith Demicoli, Ron Briffa, Eileen Montesin, Christine Haber, Marvic Camilleri and Josline Camilleri.

Everyone can take part, wherever they may be, by reading a book, listening to music, or sharing a Maltese word or expression. People can also choose Maltese when writing a birthday card or preparing wedding invitations. Schools, bookshops and organisations are encouraged to organise their own activities, such as readings or evenings of Maltese music and poetry.

Businesses can choose Maltese names for their shops or initiatives, while restaurants can offer menus in Maltese. Government departments, local councils and other entities are encouraged to ensure that their signs and notices are also available in Maltese, written clearly and correctly. The aim is for the week to leave behind habits and choices that give Maltese a greater presence throughout the year.
