Mr Brian Bartolo, who was awarded a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (by Research) by the University of Malta this year, has received the prestigious 2026 , joining ten recipients selected worldwide.
The award was presented during IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Europe 2026, held in Budapest, Hungary. Brian was recognised as a recipient from IEEE Region 8, comprising Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The international scholarship recognises academic achievement in power and energy engineering, together with contributions to the engineering community and leadership in IEEE PES student engagement.
Brian graduated with a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (by Research) from the University of Malta in 2026. His thesis, Data Analytics for Photovoltaics Reliability and Operations, explored data-driven approaches to improving the monitoring, performance assessment and reliability of photovoltaic systems.
His research was conducted within the Department of Systems and Control Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, under the principal supervision of Prof. Kenneth Scerri and co-supervision of Dr In摹. Brian Azzopardi.
The research benefited from support provided by (FiR.mt), particularly through the Horizon Europe-funded PROMISE project, which focuses on photovoltaic reliability, operations and maintenance.
Brian's research contributed to scientific publications and international conferences, including work on photovoltaic data repositories, monitoring frameworks and performance assessment in Malta's living laboratories.
Alongside his academic work, Brian contributed to IEEE technical activities, including supporting the organisation of IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2025, hosted in Malta.
The recognition demonstrates the value of collaboration between the University of Malta, research organisations and the international engineering community in developing early-career researchers.
The Faculty of Engineering congratulates Brian Bartolo on this international achievement.
