Student-produced podcasts are becoming a defining feature of the B.A. (Hons) in Politics and Governance at the Department of Policy, Politics and Governance (FEMA).

Designed as an accessible way to translate academic learning into public facing communication, the initiative invites students to create two original 30 minute episodes that engage directly with core course themes such as democracy, governance systems, public policy, political communication, and European/global affairs.

The project forms part of a Practicum study-unit facilitated by Prof. Mario Thomas Vassallo and is entitled, L-Istudenti Jistaqsu.

It encourages students to step beyond traditional assessment formats and experiment with how political ideas can be narrated, debated, or explained for a general audience. With the state-of-the-art logistics at , the University of Malta’s radio station, students are given a professional environment in which to bring their ideas to life.

What makes the initiative stand out is its emphasis on originality, research informed insight, and creative freedom. Students may choose from formats such as solo commentary, interviews, roundtable discussions, debates, storytelling documentary, case studies, or explainers.

This flexibility allows them to tailor their approach to the political theme they wish to explore - whether analysing a recent election, unpacking a governance crisis, or narrating the evolution of a policy issue. The result is a diverse collection of student voices that reflect both academic rigour and personal curiosity, while also strengthening communication skills that are increasingly essential in public facing political work.

As these podcasts circulate within the university community, they demonstrate how students can transform classroom learning into engaging public dialogue, making complex political issues understandable and relevant to wider audiences. The series – L-Istudenti Jistaqsu – is being aired during the summer schedule of Campus 103.7 on the following slots:

The BA (Hons) Politics and Governance course will once again be offered in the upcoming academic year, continuing to welcome Maltese and international students eager to explore the study of politics, governing institutions, and public life.
